Employability Skills

When job searching don’t forget that employers are not only looking for technical skills but also employability skills and personal attributes.

Although employers may want to hire people with specialised skills they are just as interested in employability skills and personal attributes. For example they will want to know how well you work in a team, whether you can work independently and if you use your initiative to solve problems. Employability skills can be applied to any job or study.

Employers agree that the eight key employability skills are:

  • communication
  • team work as well as an ability to work independently
  • problem-solving
  • initiative and enterprise
  • planning and organising
  • self-management
  • learning
  • technology skills.

Attributes employers value:

  • loyalty
  • commitment
  • honesty
  • enthusiasm
  • personal presentation
  • common sense
  • positive self-esteem
  • sense of humour
  • ability to deal with pressure
  • motivation
  • adaptability.
