Radiographers

Radiographers also known as Medical Imaging Technologists and Sonographers operate X-ray and other imaging equipment to produce radiographs (X-ray films) and other images which are used in the diagnoses and subsequent management of disease or injury.

Radiographers use a range of special equipment in their roles such as:

  • fluoroscopy equipment - which gives a moving image of the part being examined
  • angiography equipment - which images blood vessels and
  • computed tomography (CT) equipment - which gives cross-sectional images of the body.

Radiographers can specialise as Sonographers who operate ultrasound machines and related equipment to produce images for medical diagnostic purposes. To find out more view a video about the day in the life of a sonographer.

Forensic Scientists

Forensic Scientists apply scientific procedures and techniques to the examination of physical evidence that may assist in legal investigations.

A wide range of expertise is required in forensic investigations. A forensic scientist may specialise in chemistry, physics, biochemistry, molecular biology, botany, geology, metallurgy, pharmacology, toxicology, crime scene examination, firearms examination, fingerprint and document examination.

Shipwrights

Shipwrights construct, fit out, commission and repair all types of vessels from small pleasure craft through to a range of competitive, commercial and naval vessels. These vessels are built from a range of materials including metal, wood, aluminium, fibreglass, plastic, composites or ferro cement (reinforced cement or concrete).

Shipwrights work within the Transport, Industry Manufacturing and Engineering Industry. Ship building in Australia is an innovative, export oriented industry serving clients in niche markets. Its success is built upon developing innovative designs and manufacturing processes, and high standards of quality and cost competitiveness. Australian firms have developed an excellent reputation in the construction of fast aluminium ferries, particularly catamarans, for passengers and vehicles as well as military platforms.

Geographic Information Systems Officers

Geographic Information Systems Officers develop and customise geographic information systems and provide technical and analytical support to address issues such as environmental management, exploration and mining, land ownership and titles, urban and regional planning, utilities and asset management, and demographic marketing.

Occupations like geographic information systems officers are part of the Spatial Information Industry. The spatial information industry can be characterised as those businesses that trade in location based products and services. Activities in the industry include the collection, storage, manipulation, analysis and display of spatial data and information.

Child Care Workers

Child Care Workers care for social, emotional, physical and education needs of infants and young children in various care settings. In their day to day duties child care workers may plan and implement developmental programs, observe and record children’s growth, behaviour and development, and discuss with parents, prepare light snacks and meals and maintain a safe, clean, appealing environment.

Job prospects for child care workers are very good and employment growth over the next five years is expected to be strong.

Multimedia Developers

Multimedia Developers generate and manipulate graphic images, animations, sound, text and video into consolidated and seamless multimedia programs. Multimedia applications include computer-based interactive training, data presentation and information kiosks, CD-ROMs, entertainment and education products and multimedia presentations.

There is an interesting range of specialisations in this field including, author-based programming, computer animator, computer-based graphic designer, digital video sound editor, game developer, instructional designer and multimedia programmers.
