Australian Apprenticeships

Want to work and earn money straight away after year 12 in a sought after job? Then an Australian Apprenticeship may be worth looking into. With apprenticeships you can complete on-the-job training, earn good money and get recognition for it.

As at 31st December 2006 there were 397,400 apprentices and trainees in-training, compared to 395 000 the year before. There are more than 1500 qualifications available through apprenticeships. You can choose to do them full time, part time or school based. You basically combine time spent on the job with training to attain different levels of nationally recognised certificates or an advanced diploma.

The good thing about apprenticeships is that they are flexible and can take into account the skills and knowledge you already possess to shorten the training length. This would work really well if you have completed a VET in schools course or have finished year 12. Keep in mind that when employers are selecting you for an apprentice they prefer those that have completed year 12.

The pay rate for apprentices depends on a few things:

  • the industry you are working in
  • your year level
  • your credentials
  • and whether industry or national awards are applied.

To find more information regarding how much you will be paid visit an Australian Apprenticeship Centre or an industry organisation.

Apprenticeships can offer you a whole range of occupations spanning across many sectors, from conventional trades to innovative technologies. A few examples are listed below:

  • Information technology
  • Sport and recreation
  • Building and Construction
  • Hairdressing
  • Automotive
  • Finance services
  • Transport and distribution
  • Community services and health

If you are looking for a job that will allow you to earn while you learn, present satisfying and challenging work, establish a well paying career, be self employed or teach then an apprenticeship may be for you.

Visit Group Training Australia to find an apprenticeship or traineeship or a local Group Training Organisation (GTO). GTO’s can help you find work for a variety of businesses and gain a broader experience.

You can also find a range of information on the Australian Apprenticeships website.
