Take a break
While many school leavers want to go straight into tertiary
education and training, many take a break in their first year out of
school, to travel, pursue a hobby, earn money, or gain skills and
life experience before moving on to formal study.
This is also known as a gap year (although it could last anything
from weeks to months). The experience gained and initiative shown in
a year out can be of enormous benefit. There are many ways a year
out can enhance your understanding of your chosen field of study and
add to your future employability.
By planning it properly you can make the most out of your gap
break. For example, have you ever thought of using the time to
pursue your hobbies or gain certain skills or life experiences?
These ideas could compliment your resume by demonstrating initiative
and determination as part of your personal strengths.
You could also use the time to research your likes and dislikes
by working in different industries and to give you a feel of what
the real working world is like.
The ADF gap year is a new Australian Defence Force (ADF) program
for students or recent school leavers. This 12 month program is
designed to provide you with a unique opportunity and invaluable
skills and experiences. You will be paid for your participation in
the program, and there's no requirement to serve after your gap
year. For more information visit
